【Red Maple Journal / Helen Yang】 On June 20, 2026, Richmond Hill Regional and Local Councillor Joe DiPaola hosted his annual Fun Community BBQ at Richmond Green Park. The signature community event brought together more than 5,000 residents, families, neighbours, community leaders, representatives from 50 community groups and non-profit organizations, as well as sponsors, food vendors, and performers.

Richmond Hill Regional Councillor Joe DiPaola welcomed residents and guests to his annual Community BBQ and shared Richmond Hill Mayor David West’s greetings and congratulations. He also thanked the dignitaries and elected officials who attended the opening ceremony, including MP Vincent Ho, MP Costas Menegakis, MPP Daisy Wai’s representative, Deputy Mayor Godwin Chan, Local Councillors Carol Davidson, Scott Thompson, Simon Cui, Karen Cilevitz, and Michael Shiu, as well as Trustee Robert Kolosowski.

At the Opening Ceremony, Regional Councillor Joe DiPaola said:

“This event is about community. It is about bringing people together, sharing good food, enjoying great entertainment, and celebrating the many people who help make Richmond Hill such a welcoming and vibrant place to live.

I would like to extend a sincere thank you to our performers, volunteers, City staff, community partners, sponsors, and everyone who helped make today’s event possible. Events like this take a tremendous amount of planning and teamwork, and I am truly grateful for everyone’s support.

Most importantly, thank you to the residents of Richmond Hill. Your support, participation, and community spirit are what make events like this so special.”

Community leader Monique Dennison served as the MC for the four-hour entertainment program, which featured a diverse lineup of cultural performances, celebrations, and live music, and showcased Richmond Hill’s multicultural spirit, creativity, and artistic talent.

The live entertainment opened with a dynamic and energetic performance by the Women’s Dragon Drum Group, followed by the Canadian Cultural Harmony Association, which presented a cultural storytelling fusion of music, dance, and instrumental performances. Award-winning vocalist Jeliz, accompanied by Duff Music, entertained the audience with two live concert sets, while recognition of local residents and community organizations continued throughout the afternoon.

Special presentations honoured Richmond Hill couple Glenna and Jack Impy in celebration of their 60th wedding anniversary, local children’s author April Kameka for her literary achievements, and Yuri for Songs of Richmond Hill.

Community Group Recognitions honoured the Richmond Hill Royal Canadian Legion and the Lions Club for their outstanding contributions to the community. An Emergency Services Tribute recognized and thanked representatives from York Regional Police, York Region Paramedic Services, and Richmond Hill Fire and Emergency Services for their service, professionalism, courage, and dedication to protecting the community.

Throughout the event, Regional Councillor Joe DiPaola warmly greeted attendees, listened to residents’ voices and feedback, and received many words of appreciation from conversations. He wished everyone a safe, memorable, and enjoyable day.

As the event came to a close, Regional Councillor Joe DiPaola announced the Colouring Contest winners and presented them with gift bag prizes. He also thanked everyone for their participation and expressed his appreciation to all supporters who contributed to the success of the event.

During his closing remarks, he shared a special thank-you message and a surprise birthday greeting for his wife, Mrs. Charity DiPaola, recognizing her unwavering support and encouragement throughout his years of public service.

On a bright and sunny day, attendees enjoyed free BBQ burgers and drinks, live music, children’s activities, face painting, balloon art, a colouring contest, and Community Group Recognition presentations that honoured the contributions of local organizations and residents.

Following the Community BBQ event, Regional Councillor Joe DiPaola made a $3,000 donation on June 29, 2026, to the Richmond Hill Community Food Bank to support local families in need.

Regional Councillor Joe DiPaola was first elected to Richmond Hill Council in 1997 and has served Richmond Hill residents through four terms on Richmond Hill City Council. He currently holds several leadership roles with both the City of Richmond Hill and York Region, including:

· Chair of the Richmond Hill Budget Committee of the Whole

· Chair of York Region’s Economic Development Committee

· Chair of the Official Plan Update Committee

· Board Member of York Region Telecom

· Board Member of York Region Transit

· Board Member of York Region’s Planning Advisory Committee

· Board Member of Richmond Hill’s Audit Committee

He has introduced motions at both City and Regional Council to ensure all AEDs are registered with the provincial system. Now, when an emergency happens, 9-1-1 operators can guide residents to the closest registered AED, helping to save lives.

Recently he brought forward a motion at York Region Council to support local businesses, an initiative that will help guide procurement toward local companies. Supporting local businesses remains a priority. His work also continues with local police to strengthen community safety.

He appreciates the opportunity and privilege to continue serving residents and remains committed to building a caring, inclusive, and safe Richmond Hill together with the community.
