【Red Maple Journal / Helen Yang】 On February 9th, 2025, the Honourable Leah Taylor Roy, Member of Parliament for Aurora - Oak Ridges - Richmond Hill, proudly and wholeheartedly presented the King Charles III Coronation Medal to thirty distinguished recipients in recognition of their exceptional service, leadership, and contributions to Canadian society. The ceremony, held at Aurora's historic Armoury, celebrated individuals who have exemplified the highest standards of dedication in community service, arts and culture, public service, education, heritage preservation, innovation, diversity and inclusion, healthcare, and environmental advocacy.

The recipients of this prestigious honour are:
Phiona Durrant, Giovanni Battaglini, Glemena Lenora Maria Bettencourt, Sean Cisterna, Paulo Da Silva, Razak Damani, Paolo Costantino D'Elia, Akil Dhirani, Howard Arthur Doughty, Thomas Davey Gordon, Charles Hendriks, Patrick Hung, Levon lchkhanian, Shabbir Jaffer, Gloria Marsh, Hamida Merchant, Jan Oudenes, Adriana Pisano Beaumont, Ernie Polsoni, Lily Pourzand, Karim Premji, Isobel Ralston, Arshia Sanjani, Rebecca Lyn Shields, Alexander Van Hemert, Susan Walmer, Brock Weir, Thomas K.K. Yeung, Margaret Phyllis Zeidler, and Jaclyn Zhang.
Each of these individuals has demonstrated remarkable commitment to strengthening their communities, advancing public good, and representing Canada with distinction. Whether through their advocacy, professional excellence, or selfless service, they have helped build the Canada we are proud of today.

The King Charles III Coronation Medal was awarded to community members who have helped build the Canada of today by making significant contributions in Canada or made an outstanding achievement in another country that brought recognition to Canada. Recipients were selected for work as a volunteer or member of an organization; for demonstrating high professionalism; or for performing a deed or activity that brought recognition to Canada.
Recipients were selected based on:
· Volunteerism and
leadership within an
organization or
community initiative.
· Professional excellence and impact within their field.
· An act of distinction that has brought honour and recognition to Canada.
This limited and prestigious honour recognizes individuals who have uplifted those in need, strengthened their communities, and inspired others to follow in their footsteps.

The 2025 recipients were recognized for their outstanding achievements in:
· Community service - supporting families, children, and vulnerable populations.
· Arts & culture - enriching society through
storytelling, music, and creative
expression.
· Education & mentorship - shaping future leaders
with knowledge and compassion.
· Healthcare & innovation
- advancing medical research and improving access to care.
· Public service & justice - strengthening
democracy, fairness, and safety in
our communities.
· Heritage preservation & environmental protection - safeguarding our
history and natural spaces.
· Sports & youth development - inspiring the next generation through teamwork and
perseverance.
· Diversity, equity, and inclusion - breaking barriers and ensuring every voice is heard.

MP Leah Taylor Roy extends her deepest appreciation to the Coronation Medal selection committee, whose diligence and dedication ensured a fair and thoughtful selection process. She also wishes to recognize the hardworking staff, volunteers, and the team at Niagara College's Aurora Armoury, who played a crucial role in making this event a success.

Special recognition was also given to Mr. John Green, the Master of Ceremonies, who guided the event with grace and professionalism. MP Taylor Roy highlighted that John himself was going to be nominated as a recipient of the King Charles Ill Coronation Medal, but in an act of humility and selflessness, he declined the nomination to ensure another deserving individual could receive the honour.

The Red Maple Journal team extends its sincere congratulations to the recipients of this prestigious honour and expresses special appreciation to Mr. Giovanni Battaglini for his dedicated support of the development of Red Maple Journal. We salute his long-term contributions, which have helped in preserving Italian heritage, promoting international arts and cultural exchange, empowering youth, and supporting cultural organizations in his community.

The Coronation Medal commemorates the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III as King of Canada. The medal program was first announced three days before the Coronation, on May 3, 2023, by the Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The design of the medal and the details of the program were announced by Rideau Hall on May 6, 2024, the first anniversary of the Coronation.

The Office of the Secretary to the Governor General is responsible for administering the King Charles III Coronation Medal Program in Canada. A total of 30,000 medals will be awarded.
Before the introduction of the King Charles III Coronation Medal in Canada, the last coronation medal presented was the 1953 Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Medal.
